The Quality & Industry Human Resource Development Unit within the Malta Tourism Authority is launching the CHOICE programme for the fifteenth consecutive year. Choice is designed to give information and familiarise secondary students with careers in the tourism industry, showing that the tourism industry can be a source of gainful and rewarding employment.
The Choice programme has various elements aimed at students attending secondary schools, the first stage of the programme is for Form 3 students who are given the opportunity to visit a hotel where a show round is organised, followed by a brief induction. This, for most, is the first experience of the world of work. The students may also take part in the Choice Quiz in connection with tourism and can win prizes offered by stakeholders in the industry.
Once students progress to form 4 an even more interesting part of the Choice programme awaits them. Students are placed for a week in a tourism establishment where they shadow different aspects of the operation to better understand the role of employees and career options available. During the week students experience and observe firsthand the skills required in the world of work. For the scholastic year 2015/16 over 135 hotel and restaurant placements are available for students. This job shadowing programme is organized with the support of the Foundation for Educational Services
In addition to this, talks by experienced stakeholders are organized for students in Form 2, 4 and 5. These one-hour sessions include information about the industry, careers, and skills needed for the world of work.
Over these fifteen years thousands of students have participated in the Choice programme organized by the MTA which continues to promote the importance of tourism for Malta’s economy.
